Trek:
EVEREST BASE CAMP
Duration: 16 Days
Grade: Moderate Challenging
Accommodation: Lodge Based
Besides the amazingly close of views of the great
Himalayan peaks, including Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Makhalu,
you will come in close contact with the Sherpa tradition and culture.
Among all the mountain communities, the Sherpas are
arguably the most discussed. Their life-style on the high mountain
side, the sparse vegetation of the high Himalayas, their co-relation
with yaks (a source of transportation, milk, cheese, meat, and wool),
and their courage have been praised by the likes of Hillary, Bonnington,
and Messner.
Our Everest experience begins at Lukla, the flight
in and out of this airstrip alone may be worth this trip. Sacred
stones, chortens (some built to commemorate the memories of climbers
who died on Everest expeditions) and fluttering prayers flags make
the path to the base camp more than a trekking route. You will frequently
meet yak caravans and cross precarious suspension bridges. This
route passes through forests of birch, conifer, rhododendron, juniper,
and tundra.
Namche Bazaar at 3,446 meters makes an enchanting
resting site. Shaped like a horseshoe, the settlement could well
be the greatest mountain amphitheater on earth. You will see Everest
(8848m), Nuptse (7879m), Lhotse (8501m), Ama Dablam, Kwangde and
Thamserku mountains. On Saturday people bring vegetables, clothes,
meat, yak tails and butter for trade and the Sherpa people gather
to exchange goods and gossip. Mountaineering souvenirs, left behind
by legendary expeditions to Everest, can also be purchased. Stop
at the village of Khumjung will fill you with tales of the legendary
Yeti a visit to the local monastery will give you a view of the
Yeti’s scalp. Tengboche monastery will show you how Sherpa
religion works, and perhaps, if lucky, see an endangered show leopard.
The climb to Kalapathar will bring before you perhaps
the best view of Everest and the Lho La pass that takes travelers
from Nepal to Tibet, the West Ridge route, and Everest all the way
to South Col. The trip to the base camp from there is fascinating,
and at the base camp you may meet numbers of Everest expeditions.

Trek: EVEREST HIGHTLIGHT
CULTURAL TREK
Duration: 11 Days
Grade: Easy
Accommodation: Lodge Based
This trek takes you to the heart of Everest Country and the land
of the legendary Sherpas without the rigors of an expedition.
The Khumbu region in eastern Nepal is the home of the Sherpas, the
world’s most famous mountaineers. The Tengboche Monastery,
center of Sherpa Buddhist culture, holds pride of place in Himalayan
iconography.
There is also the famous village of Namche Bazaar,
a meeting place for Himalayan traders and yak caravans.
The greatest prize of all is of course the view of Everest, the
highest mountain in the world. Our Everest experience begins at
Lukla airport (2850m). The trail follows the course of the Dudh
Koshi River (the ‘river of milk’) as it charges down
the narrow gorges. On the trail, you feel dwarfed by the mountains
all around.
Sacred stones, Chortens and prayer flags mark the route.
Yak caravans are frequently encountered and the precarious suspension
bridges make you pause. You may not meet a Yeti, but Barking Deer,
Musk Deer and the Himalayan Tahr or mountain goat can be seen grazing
on the steep slopes. The shaggy –coated Yak is the most famous
animal around here.
Namche Bazaar is an enchanting settlement set in a
horseshoe-shaped mountain amphitheater. Its Saturday market is a
social event where merchandise of daily use, meat, yak trail and
butter are traded. Mountaineering souvenirs left behind by expeditions
to Everest can also be found in the shops of Namche.
Tengboche Monastery sits at an altitude of 3,870m
in a clearing surrounded by firs and rhododendrons. The view from
here is a magnificent close-up of Everest (8848m), Nuptse (7879m),
Lhotse (8500m), Ama Dablam, Kwangde and Thamserku. A day at Khumjung
will fill you with tales of the legendary Yeti and a view of Yeti
is scalp at the local monastery.

Trek: Gokyo Lakes & Everest Base Camp
Duration: 21 Days
Grade: Moderate – Challenging
Accommodation: Lodge Based
The Gokyo route gets you off the beaten track to Everest and offers
a better view of the peak and a number of other giants.
Gokyo lake sits at an altitude of 4,750m at the side
of the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest in the Nepal Himalaya. From
a ridge above the lake, the great peaks of Cho Oyu (8,153m), Everest,
Lhotse and Makalu (8,481m, the fifth highest mountain in the world)
can be taken in at one sweep. The emerald surface of the lake spreads
out far below and there are stone-walled pastures on its shores.
The trail starts at the air strip of Lukla and follows
the Dudh Koshi River through stretches of forest and over log bridges.
Load –carrying yaks grunt past and you have your first glimpse
of Everest through a clump of trees. Namche Bazaar is the Sherpa
capital and center of activity in the Khumbu region. It’s
terrace of houses set in a horseshoe shaped hollow dramatically
comes into view as you round a bend.
The Sherpas have historically been herders and traders
and Namche Bazaar was the staging point for business trips into
Tibet. We will also be visiting the school in Khumjung village which
was built by Sir Edmund Hillary for the Sherpa children.
After exploring around Gokyo, we descend to Phortse
and make tracks for Gorakshep (5160m) via Pheriche and Lobuche along
the Khumbu Glacier. Kalapathar (5545m) offers the best vantage point
for viewing Everest. Tengboche Monastery, the focus of Sherpa Buddhist
devotion, sits at an elevation of 3,867n with Ama Dablam (6856m)
as a magnificent backdrop.
